On board the Lofoten, time is turned back a good 50 years: built in Oslo in 1964, the ship has been sailing the classic Hurtigruten route alongside the Norwegian coast almost non-stop ever since.

MS Lofoten will now, after more than 55 years of service and her „Fare-Well-Year“, discontinue the liner service on the postal ship line – the so-called „The old Lady of the sea“ will retire (as of February 2020) – „Farewell Lofoten“:

SHIPS@SEA has therefore come on board once again in the farewell year 2020 to take an extra large photo series. With the „Lofoten“, the final-last ship of a historical-classical ship generation retires from active service with the Hurtigruten. Anyone who has ever been on board knows the „Lofoten feeling“: a mixture of rustic cosiness paired with the „patina“ of past decades. MS Lofoten is still „in good shape“ today and is lovingly looked after by her crew. In addition, there are many unique details such as ceiling lights, wall panelling, restaurant menus, or the bar at the stern of the ship, renovated in the style of the 60s. This ship is a unique overall composition.

Reason enough for us to dedicate ourselves to the special conditions on board that are hardly to be found in this form on active passenger ships nowadays:
the almost nostalgic engine room, the most different cabin facilities and – surely not less fascinating – the demanding cargo loading activities by board crane with a lot of human skills of the crew.

With two photographers we captured almost every corner of the ship from the „A-Deck“ to the „Prison“ to the „WC“ and many, many more details and moments.
The result is a photo story of this post-ship journey that will soon be history. A comparably detailed documentation can be found neither online nor in print – so we hope you truly enjoy the „good old Lofoten era“.

The Hurtigruten voyage Bergen-Kirkenes-Trondheim was made on account of shipsatsea.de with the friendly, organisational support of the Hurtigruten GmbH press office and the wonderful crew on board of MS Lofoten.
